In France, the 7th art award ceremony is called the " César ", in reference to the sculptor César, who designed the metal trophy. In Italy, it's the Venice Mostra: the term "mostra" can be translated as "showcase", so the festival is the showcase of cinema. What about the Oscars?

Officially, the name of the American ceremony is"Academy Awards". The name Oscar first appeared in 1934 as a nickname for the statuette. Its origin can be traced back to two different stories. One is that Margaret Herrick, a member of the Academy, started calling the trophy Oscar, because of its resemblance to her uncle, named... Oscar. The second explanation could be linked to American actress Bette Davis: the artist's first husband, Harmon Oscar Nelson, could also have had a resemblance to the statuette.

The official website of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has chosen to mention Margaret Herrick's story on its site, while pointing out that the actual origins of the nickname remain unclear. The name Oscar was officially adopted in 1939, and is now widely used to refer to the ceremony.
