The Festival de cinéma jeune public returns for its 6th edition, from Saturday October 19 to Sunday October 27, 2024, at the Musée du Quai Branly. This year, the festival focuses on tales and myths in cinema, with a selection of films that cross time and continents to highlight the richness of oral literature and the diversity of languages. Over the nine days of the festival, two screenings are scheduled daily at 11am and 3pm. Admission is free, with reservation, and children aged 4 and over are welcome.
"From its very beginnings, cinema has drawn its inspiration from myths and legends, as in the case of one of its first directors, George Méliès, who was already adapting some of Charles Perrault's tales," explains festival programmer Lola Devant. "Over time and right up to the present day, cinema has continued to feed on these tales, and 'storyteller-filmmakers' are constantly exploring this genre, reinventing and modernizing it."
This edition offers a cinematic journey through the fairy tales of Perrault, Andersen and the Grimm brothers, as well as more distant legends, such as the Chinese tales of the White Serpent and the Dragon King, or the Celtic myths of the werewolves. In works such as Sirocco et le royaume des courants d'air and Louise et la légende du serpent à plumes, the imagination blossoms into fabulous stories. Some works, such as Sauvages and Le Secret des Perlims, even tackle contemporary themes such as nature conservation.
This year, the festival is focusing on animated films, a genre particularly well-suited to illustrating the world of fairy tales and legends. A wide range of styles are represented, from the shadow theater of Les Contes de la Nuit to the magical sets of Peau d'Âne, by Jacques Demy.
Each screening is introduced and presented by Lola Devant and Clara Perrichon, giving viewers the context and keys to fully appreciate the films on show. Among the must-see titles in this edition are such iconic works as Peau d'Âne, Sirocco et le royaume des courants d'air, Le Secret des Perlims, and many others.
The6th Festival de cinéma jeune public is an exceptional opportunity to plunge into the world of tales and myths, through films that have captured and reinvented these timeless tales for younger generations. An edition rich in discoveries, celebrating the evocative power of the imagination and the magic of the silver screen.
