Île-de-France is a dream region for lovers of contemporary art. You'll find the Centre Pompidou, the Palais de Tokyo, the Bourse de Commerce, the Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain... And thousands of galleries! But Paris isn't the only city to host art venues and exhibitions. The proof: Vitry-sur-Seine is home to the MAC-VAL, the Val-de-Marne museum of contemporary art.
Opened in 2005, in a building designed by architect Jacques Ripault, the MAC-VAL is the only museum dedicated toFrench contemporary art, from the 1950s to the present day.
It houses a vast collection of over 2,500 works, including masterpieces by Christian Boltanski, Tatiana Trouvé, Kader Attia, Jean Hélion, Niki de Saint Phalle, Robert Doisneau, Olivier Debré, Agnès Varda, Clément Cogitore, Gina Pane, Annette Messager, Pierre Huyghe, Mimosa Echard... The MAC-VAL also gives pride of place to young artists and emerging creators, representing today's contemporary scene.
Each year, the museum organizes two temporary exhibitions, highlighting a particular artist, theme or movement. These exhibitions are designed to extend and deepen the permanent collections.
The MAC-VAL is open every day from 11am to 6pm, except Mondays, January 1st, May 1st, August 15th and December 25th. To get to the museum, take line 7 to Villejuif-Louis Aragon, then bus 172 or streetcar T9 from Porte de Choisy.
The museum also boasts a public garden covering more than 10,000 m². This garden, open to the public free of charge, is decorated with numerous sculptures and installations from the museum's collections. This tree-lined, landscaped space offers a magnificent setting for art lovers of all ages. The Vert-Verre restaurant offers a seasonal menu - from 26 euros for a set menu, to 29.5 euros for brunch or the complete starter-main course-dessert menu.
Exhibitions, lectures, workshops, activities for children, unusual events... The MAC-VAL is an unusual place to live and create, and you can't wait to visit it!
