The jury for the Caméra d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival 2024, one of the festival's most prestigious awards which celebrates one of the first films presented in the Official Selection or parallel sections (with the exception ofAcid), has now been constituted. In the past, the Caméra d'Or has been awarded to renowned filmmakers (Jim Jarmusch, Jafar Panahi, Steve McQueen), and last year it went to Pham Thien An's The Golden Butterfly Tree .
This year, it will be headed by not one but two personalities from the world of cinema: actress and director Emmanuelle Béart and director and songwriter Baloji, who himself won the Prix de la nouvelle voix Un Certain Regard in 2023 for his first feature film Augure.
This isn't the first time in the festival's history that a duo has co-chaired the jury! In 1996, actress Françoise Fabian was accompanied by director Daniel Schmid, in 2002, Marthe Keller teamed up with Géraldine Chaplin, and in 2006, brothers Luc and Jean-Pierre Dardenne shared the bill.
"As a self-taught filmmaker from the Congolese diaspora, it's an immense honor to witness the vitality of first-time filmmakers, to discover their affirmed singularities, their inaugural works that will leave a lasting imprint on the identity of their filmography," said Baloji, on the announcement of his appointment.
For her part, Emmanuelle Béart declared: "A first film is about the impossibility of doing anything other than delving into the depths of your being to find out what you can't keep quiet about. It's a deeply moving and terribly free introduction to the world: nobody's waiting for you yet. We will honor our duty with wonder and respect."
