In an isolated, conservative village in southern Egypt, a group of disenfranchised Coptic women rebel to form an all-female street theater troupe. Dreaming of becoming actors, dancers and singers, they defy their families and the locals with their provocative performances. Filmed over four years, this learning film follows these girls as they become women.
Such is the seductive scenario of The Brink of Dreams(Rafaat einy ll sama in VO), the new film by Nada Riyadh and Ayman El Amir selected for Critics' Week 2024. As a reminder, Critics' Week is a parallel section of the Cannes Film Festival that showcases first and second works.
This is not the first time that Egyptian director Ayman El Amir and Egyptian filmmaker Nada Riyadh have worked hand in hand. Together, they have already produced and directed a first feature-length documentary, Happily Ever After, as well as a short film, Fakh, which was selected for Critics' Week in 2019.
