In 2014, Ninja Turtles marked the return of the famous Teenage Mutant Turtles to the big screen with a modern reboot signed by Jonathan Liebesman and produced by Michael Bay. Adapted from the cult comic book created by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, the film combines action, adventure and a touch of offbeat humor. Alongside Megan Fox as April O'Neil, the Turtles - Leonardo, Michelangelo, Raphael and Donatello - embark on a perilous mission to defend New York from the clutches of Shredder, while remaining true to their unconditional love of pizza and light-hearted jokes.
Ninja Turtles will be available on Prime Video from December 15, 2024.
Synopsis: Get ready: four legendary heroes are about to make their presence felt in New York... Leonardo, the leader, Michelangelo, the handsome one, Raphael, the rebel, and Donatello, the mastermind, will do everything in their power to defend New York City, which has fallen into the clutches of Shredder. Aided by their master Splinter and courageous reporter April O'Neil, they embark on an explosive adventure to fulfill their destiny.
Ninja Turtles is aimed at family audiences as well as fans of action-adventure films nostalgic for the Ninja Turtles. Die-hard fans will find modernized cult elements, such as the offbeat humor and distinct personalities of the heroes, while younger fans will discover these iconic figures through state-of-the-art special effects and spectacular action scenes.
This reboot has a darker tone than previous adaptations, while retaining the playful, energetic character of the Turtles. The addition of characters like Karai and a visual overhaul of the famous enemies breathe new life into this cult franchise.
Directed by Jonathan Liebesman, known for blockbusters such as Wrath of the Titans, Ninja Turtles was designed to satisfy historical fans while appealing to a new generation. Megan Fox, chosen to play April O'Neil, wears a yellow jacket in homage to the character's iconic outfit from the animated series.
The film is distinguished by its use of motion capture, which brings the turtles to life with impressive fluidity. Actors were trained in an intensive camp to master the martial arts and give added credibility to the fight scenes, inspired by films such as The Raid.
Produced by Michael Bay, the film was controversial because of its reinvention of the Turtles' origins, linked here to an extraterrestrial substance. Despite the criticism, co-creator Kevin Eastman supported this modernized vision.
Ninja Turtles offers a new interpretation of the Teenage Mutant Turtles in a spectacular film combining action, humor and nostalgia. With its charismatic heroes, impressive fight scenes and a touch of modernity, this reboot will appeal to thrill-seekers and nostalgic fans of the franchise alike.
Our opinion on Ninja Turtles:
Bof bof... The Ninja Turtles film adaptation lacks grace and creativity. It's even, let's be frank, rather brutal and vulgar, with some interminable action scenes (unbearable for the uninitiated).
The Turtles are presented as four standard teenagers, abusing heavy-handed jokes and annoying irony. The problem with this kind of film is not so much its profound banality, but its inability to really entertain the viewer, offering something of substance and quality. It's clear that the film's only aim is to be a pure attraction, with strong effects, but which never rises to the challenge of being a good film, which could save the impression of "yet another film for the money"...
Also, the kids who watched Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have grown up: the film is absolutely not suitable for a young audience, but it's not clever enough for its old, grown-up audience either. It's purely regressive, and indulges in its nostalgic flavor. Really, we're not convinced.
