Our review of LEGO 2K Drive:
Playing time: 4 hours, including story mode and multiplayer.
Here's a game that should keep your youngest children busy during their console time! LEGO 2K Drive plunges you into the crazy LEGO universe in "Mario Kart ++" style, offering the ultimate game for all fans of the genre. It's a great success on several counts, starting with the story mode, which is non-existent on its Nintendo competitor. With the aim of winning the Celestial Cup,LEGO 2K Drive invites you to challenge several champions in an open world, where you'll have to complete various racing missions, win flags and navigate from map to map in search of the best opponents to defeat. The goal is an interesting one, and will undoubtedly provide many hours of gameplay for those who want to see it through to the end.
A game in which you'll also have to unlock races by gaining EXP, and this is the only small problem encountered in the game: right from the start, to access the third race, you have to reach level 4 to be able to face your opponent. When you reach this level, level 2, it's still okay (two levels are easily reached via side missions or with the possibility of redoing races you've already done), but when you reach level 10 and the next race unlocks at level 20... it starts to get complicated! Especially as the tasks are generally repetitive. In the end, you end up doing the same races over and over again, making the whole thing a little too redundant.
But the game's characteristic LEGO humor and lurid universe take the sting out of this setback, delivering races that are each more memorable than the last. In fact, the races are identical to those of Nintendo's competitor, with bonuses and traps being added at several points along the way to spice up the race. And in this respect, LEGO 2K Drive does far better than any other game of its kind... How? Firstly, by offering bonuses and traps that are completely different from what the competition has to offer, but also, and above all, by offering fewer of them during its races - three lined up at various points on the circuit, instead of five in the case of its direct Japanese competitor. It's fresh, almost innovative, even, and makes for faster, more dynamic racing.
In terms of customization, it's also a nice surprise, since there are virtually no limits to your creativity, provided you can unlock the parts you want. The whole mechanic is captivating, and will give you many hours to try and find the perfect equipment to make a difference, cosmetically speaking. And when it comes to multiplayer, there's something for everyone, whether you're playing locally with friends or children, or online with other gamers.
So, what's the verdict? Despite the small flaw noted, the software is still pleasant to play, ideal for introducing your children to racing games and having a great time with them. Is there room for improvement? Yes, of course, but the basics are there and promise many hours of fun with the controller in hand. All that's left is for you to make up your own mind, folks? And enjoy the game!
