Our review of Under The Waves :
Playing time: 10h, story finished.
A nice narrative game to put in everyone's hands... That's what we can say about Parallel Studios' latest release, Under the Waves. A lovely game in its narrative, then, focusing on the story of Stan, mourning the death of his daughter, Pearl, three years earlier. The journey through grief is particularly well conveyed, through various contemplative scenes as beautiful as they are distressing. The two alternative endings are particularly heartbreaking.
In terms of gameplay, the game is fairly easy to handle, but its missions are fairly redundant. This redundancy contributes to the feeling of loneliness and unease that accompanies mourning, making players experience, in their own way, what Stan is going through. And graphically speaking, the exploration phases are rather pretty. On the other hand, the modeling of the main character is a little crude.
The game also places a strong emphasis onecology, since throughout the adventure you'll have to clean up the seabed by collecting plastic and bits of metal. It's a responsible message that's particularly well conveyed, yet subtle enough to remain firmly in the player's mind. The game's dialogue is equally well-written, with a moving ending. A special mention for the spellbinding soundtrack.
In short, a lovely story to be savored without moderation. So, shall we dive in, folks?
