Retaining the hybrid concept of its predecessor, the console can also be played in portable mode or on a TV. It will feature a more powerful chip developed with Nvidia, compatible with technologies such as DLSS, to optimize fluidity and image quality. Nintendo has announced partial backward compatibility with Switch games, stating in a press release that"some Nintendo Switch titles may be incompatible or not fully compatible with Nintendo Switch 2".
In detail, the console is equipped with a 7.9" 1080p LCD screen. This screen offers a Full HD display, with sharper colors and better fluidity of movement. The Nintendo Switch 2 retains a similar thickness to the Nintendo Switch and offers improved graphics rendering, even in portable mode. Sound quality has also been revised, with 3D spatial sound and a more natural rendering of dialogue and sound effects.
The new Joy-Con 2 controllers are magnetically attached to the console. What's more, they can also be used as computer mice on certain compatible games. Note that the rear support is now freely adjustable, and a second USB-C port is located on the top of the console, enabling it to be recharged while playing in table-top mode, or to connect a compatible camera.
The console features 256GB of internal memory, eight times that of the Nintendo Switch. Storage is expandable only via microSD Express cards. Nintendo Switch 2 is compatible with previous-generation Joy-Con and Pro controllers, as well as with part of the Nintendo Switch games catalog, although some titles may not be fully compatible. The docking station enables up to 4K resolution and 120fps display with compatible games and TVs.
In terms of new features, let's start with GameChat! This is a new voice and video chat feature, enabling up to 12 people to chat online, with or without a microphone. Up to four users can share their screen. Please note, however, that children under the age of 16 must obtain parental authorization via the parental control mobile application. GameChat is available without subscription until March 31, 2026, when it will be integrated into the Nintendo Switch Online service.

Another feature is GameShare, which lets you play locally or online with a single copy of a compatible game. You can also manage your digital games via virtual game cards, lend them out or use them offline on several consoles in the same household. Accessibility features also make it possible to change text size or convert text and speech, including in GameChat.
Last but not least, parental control tools are still present, allowing you to monitor console use, set time limits and manage authorizations for online discussions. In this way, Nintendo intends to offer a secure, supervised experience on its new console.
