A few months ago, Les Toits Parisiens, a store specializing in the roofs of Paris opened in the heart of the Marais, in the Saint-Paul district. Here, you will learn all about ridge ornaments, old slates, dormers, bull's eyes and other weathervanes, but also, you will learn more about the unusual job of roofer-ziners, a profession too little known and yet essential in the capital.
Since the 18th century, the profession of roofer-zincer has existed, and it is thanks to this profession that more than 35,000 Haussmann buildings are covered with zinc, giving the roofs of Paris those gray streaks so characteristic of this material. We also findslate, which the roofers-ziners also work. In the store, you can discover, touch or even sculpt these materials that are used to cover and protect our roofs.
Moreover, the store now offers workshops, in partnership with Wecandoo, to shape an object from an old slate that covered the Parisian roofs. Sessions are on reservation and accessible for adults and young people from 12 years old, count 60 € per person for an hour and a half workshop, the opportunity to carve and take home an authentic piece of Paris!
