On November 15, 2023,the London Philharmonic Orchestra will perform at the famous Parisian venue, the Comédie des Champs Elysées. Conducted byEdward Gardner, this unique performance will highlight the indelible imprint left by Johannes Brahms on the history of classical music.
Piano virtuoso Hélène Grimaud will join the ensemble on stage. The program will be entirely devoted to Brahms, featuring the Concerto for piano and orchestra n°1 op. 15 and the Symphony n°1 op. 68.
Johannes Brahms, often considered Robert Schumann's "musical messiah", marked a turning point in the evolution of symphonic music. Despite Beethoven's imposing shadow, Brahms outdid himself to produce two piano concertos and four symphonies, which remain popularly performed to this day.
The London Philharmonic Orchestra's Brahms Program, despite the long and laborious musical forms to compose, promises a distinctive performance. The Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No. 1, lasting almost 50 minutes, introduces the piano only after a long overture by the orchestra, and requires impressive technique on the part of the soloist.
On the other hand, Brahms' Symphony No.1 marks a return to classical symphonic form at a time dominated by late-Romantic "program" musical forms.
Hélène Grimaud's close relationship with Brahms makes this performance all the more captivating. The Comédie des Champs Elysées will thus be the stage for a memorable night celebrating Brahms' enduring legacy in the history of classical music.
