While the Philharmonie de Paris is currently hosting the exhibition"Metal: Diabolus in musica", Arte has chosen to honor this musical genre this Friday, April 26, 2024 in the second half of the evening. To be seen from 10:35 pm, this new French documentary, directed by Sophie Peyrard, plunges us into the"Nwobhm", in other words the"New wave of British heavy metal". This movement, which emerged in Great Britain in the late 1970s, revolutionized the world of rock music, driven at the time by bands such as Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple. In particular, the"Nwobhm" gave a new face to metal.
Then came a number of bands armed with devastating riffs and frenetic rhythms, including Iron Maiden and Girlschool, considered one of the few female bands in the genre, as well as Def Leppard, Saxon and Diamond Head.Headbanging", the concept of frantically swinging one's head in time with the music, also made its appearance, as did the famous"air guitar".
Although the beginnings were rather difficult, Neal Kay, a metal music-loving DJ, enabled the"New wave of British heavy metal" to really take off, thanks to his London venue, known at the time as the Bandwagon.
The documentary " Heavy Metal Kingdom: The New Wave of British Rock " takes us back in time to follow in the footsteps of this movement, through archive footage and exclusive testimonials from several of the genre's leading figures and lesser-known artists who undeniably left their mark on the"Nwobhm": Kim McAuliffe, singer and guitarist of Girlschool, Lars Ulrich, legendary drummer of Metallica, Paul Di'Anno, the first singer of Iron Maiden, Biff Byford, famous singer of Saxon, Brian Tatler of Diamond Head without forgetting the former DJ Neal Kay.
The documentary " Heavy Metal Kingdom: La nouvelle vague rock britannique " (52 minutes) can be seen this April 26, 2024 at 10:35 pm on Arte.
