Written and directed by Mathilde Saubole, Une Certaine Idée du Paradis runs throughout November 2023, on Sundays, Mondays and Tuesdays, at the Théâtre de Belleville. On stage, the Clac! company performs the play, including Lani Sogoyou, the actress who played the prosecutor in Plus Belle laVie , as well as Odile Lavie, Richard Chevallier, Damien Carlet and Anne Seiller.
Une Certaine Idée du Paradis (A Certain Idea of Paradise ) tells the story of Rémi Zinski, who one evening sees his father Georges hit by a runaway car. While Rémi and his mother are waiting to hear from him in an emergency department in crisis, a young woman, Julia, offers to falsify Rémi's testimony in exchange for money, the kind of money that changes a life. Rémi accepts. Except that Georges disappears. He's not dead, he's disappeared. As the emergency room goes up in flames, Rémi tries to figure out what to do.
Mathilde Saubole 's Une Certaine Idée du Paradis is a gripping play with an underlying social context. Bodies run and waltz to their heart's content, sets are made and unmade as technicians dressed as Musidora in Irma Vep unroll them on stage, in full view of everyone.
Subtly tinged with fantastical notes sprinkled here and there, Compagnie Clac! 's piece is open to interpretation, and some will come away from the experience seeing no end in sight. Immersive and rhythmic (the street rescue scene!), the intimate staging, ideal for this human-sized theater, allows us to plunge headlong into this night at the hospital that turns sour, into this maze of cold, aseptic rooms, where each actor, playing several characters, takes us along with them in their quest for truth, justice and forgiveness.
