Meteorites, those stones that fell from the sky, are the focus of a major exhibition at the Galerie de l'Evolution from October 18, 2017 to January 6, 2019.
Long feared by mankind, meteorites are now a source of inspiration and emotion for astronomy enthusiasts. Studied by scientists, they carry invaluable information and remain a source of fantasy and wonder.
Since the 1990s, research in this field has been booming, boosted not only by the discovery of exceptional meteorites, but also by the development of astronomical observations. The Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle, an exhibition and research center, has had a meteorite collection since 1847.
The first meteorites to enter the Museum came from the personal collection of René Just Haüy (1743-1822). Today, the MNHN boasts the world's 3rd largest collection of meteorites from observed falls, with 4,000 meteorites, hundreds of which are on display in the Galerie de Minéralogie et de Géologie!
A few metres from this small gallery, in the magnificent Galerie de l'Evolution, the " Météorites, entre ciel et terre " exhibition invites visitors on a journey through space and time. First on Earth, around meteorite falls, then to shooting stars and the origins of the solar system to discover the origin and diversity of meteorites.
With an interactive and immersive approach, the scenography features meteorites in spectacular large-scale projections with innovative devices, in a poetic and contemporary atmosphere. Over 350 pieces from the Museum's collection are on display, along with rare items from public and private collections around the world.
Exceptionally, visitors can even touch a piece of the Moon and a piece of Mars! Suitable for children and adults alike, this playful exhibition invites us to discover the different kinds of meteorites, to smell them, touch them and see the impact they have had on Earth.
A dozen works will be on display in the exhibition, for meditative pauses, including Meteor by Evariste Richer (2016), Pierre de Lune by Vera Pagava (1970) and Teoría, La Cabeza de Goliath by Eduardo Basualdo (2014).
A wonderful discovery to make!
