Do you know Takesada Matsutani ? The 82-year-oldJapanese artist, who has lived in Paris for over 50 years, is a leading figure inhard-edge painting, with a highly personal "black" oeuvre.
In France, Matsutani is re-examining his spiritual reflections, influenced by the Shinto and Buddhism that shaped his childhood, through various readings. This led him to develop an increasingly personal style, in whichexperiments with organic matter were combined with work on the notion ofspace-time.
His career really began in 1963, when, at the age of 26, Takesada Matsutani was accepted into the Gutai group. At the time, he was producing paintings with surfaces covered in gaping blisters, obtained from a process using vinyl glue. Three years later, he won first prize in a Franco-Japanese art competition, and spent six months in France. He never returned, and became an assistant to Stanley William Hayter, through whom he discovered the American hard-edge style.
Takesada Matsutani spent his entire career working with organic matter, tinting his work with the Shinto and Buddhism that had shaped his childhood. His works are popular with museums, including the Centre Pompidou, to which the artist has donated 22 creations.
Takesada Matsutani only began participating in major international exhibitions and fairs in 2013, and while he was relatively unknown to the public before then, his stock is exploding. In 2017, he was even invited to create an in situ installation at the 57th Venice Biennale!
