A summit meeting... This is what the Musée Marmottan Monet is offering with theexhibition Cézanne et les maîtres. Rêve d'Italie, on view since February 27. The museum reopens its doors on June 2, and the exhibition will run until January 3, 2021. For the first time, this retrospective exhibition presents the painter's work in relation to the masterpieces of the greatest masters of Italian painting, from the 16th to the Novecento (19th century).

For the occasion, a fine selection of Cézanne 's canvases - including the iconic Montagne Sainte-Victoire and the must-see Pastorale and Natures-Mortes - are set against a rare selection of early paintings by Tintoretto, El Greco, Ribera, Giordano and Nicolas Poussin, who trained in Rome. The exhibition concludes with works by Novecento greats such as Carrà, Sironi, Soffici and Pirandello, not forgetting Boccioni and Morandi.

In all, some sixty works from the world's most important public and private collections are on show! The first part of the exhibition highlights theimpact of Latin culture on Cézanne 's work, and the way in which he drew on the example of his illustrious predecessors to establish a "new" style of painting.

The second part of the exhibition illustratesCézanne's influence on the great masters of the Italian Novecento, from Carrà and Morandi to Boccioni. Works that respond to one another, offering visitors a comprehensive overview of Northern European painting and its history. It's a wonderful exhibition to be discovered at once! Shall we head off to the Musée Marmottan Monet, folks?

Please note that it's been over 4 years since our last visit, so the place and experience may have changed.
