An artist who hasn't had a monograph in Paris for over sixty years... The Musée d'Orsay invites you to discover an exhibition of works byAristide Maillol, entitled Aristide Maillol, la quête de l'harmonie, from April 12 to August 21, 2022. This monograph offers a new perspective on this sculptor, often pitted against Rodin, through a selection of his sculptures, drawings and sketchbooks.
The exhibition highlights the artist's"fertile and little-known" period just before the First World War. Conceived in partnership with the Fondation Dina Vierny - Musée Maillol, but also with the Musée de l'Orangerie, the Oskar Reinhart Foundation in Winterthur, the Kunshaus Zürich and La Piscine in Roubaix, this retrospective also presents Aristide Maillol as one of the crucial players in the birth of modernity in the early 20th century.
In all, over 200 works are presented - including 90 sculptures, as well as drawings, engravings, paintings and other decorative arts - in dialogue with other works by artists contemporary to Maillol, such as Rodin, Maurice Denis, Pierre Bonnard, Auguste Renoir and Édouard Vuillard. These works highlight"the fruitful exchanges he forged with his friends and relations" and enable us to understand"the working stages of an artist obsessed by the plastic possibilities of the female body".
The Musée d'Orsay showcases these sculptures and paintings, creating a dialogue between them. We can see the artist's creative process, his inspirations and influences. A true jack-of-all-trades, he worked in plaster, wood, fabric and oil paint. Fascinated by the nude, he never stopped trying to reproduce the bodies of his muses, models sublimated by the artist's eye.
The exhibition is chronological, but also presents the artist thematically in two specific zones: Maillol le Catalan, devoted to"his attachment to his native land and his personality", and Models, focusing on"the diversity of the men and women who posed for him". A must-see exhibition for all sculpture lovers... Shall we go, friends?
