Photographer Lekha Singh takes us on a journey around the world. Armed with her camera, the Indo-American artist set out to meet the millions of women who carry the survival of their families and communities by the strength of their arms. Water, food, raw materials, linen, work objects... These burdens take many forms, and never seem to lighten, despite the passing years.
From June 29, 2022 to January 3, 2023, the Musée de l' Homme invites us to discover this formidable photographic work. Exhibited in the Germaine Tillion foyer, Lekha Singh's work reveals harsh realities, but magnified by the artist's eye, telling the story of these women who carry theworld.
In fields, markets, villages and cities, on roads the world over, we see them: these women who carry spectacular loads to survive, and try to offer a better life to their loved ones. Far from being maudlin, this exhibition is a tribute to the strength of these women, a celebration of their courage.
Asia, Africa, America: whatever their origin, age or skin color, these women's lives are all the same. Lekha Singh also denounces global warming, the advance of desertification, wars, globalization and inequality of opportunity, which prevent these women from overcoming their situation, despite their best efforts.
The vibrant colors, exceptional landscapes, clear images and beauty of these strong women transform this difficult subject into a magnificent journey. It's a real love letter that the photographer addresses to her muses, through shots that highlight the importance of their daily tasks, which are sometimes invisible.
The photographs are accompanied by short texts and statistical data, giving us a better understanding of the daily lives and actions of these women - information that only makes their courage all the more exemplary. Lekha Singh, with her talent and passion, manages to tell a whole story in a single shot.
A wonderful exhibition to discover at the Musée de l'Homme, to better understand the lives of millions of people across the globe.
