Trying to remember a dream when one wakes up is extremely difficult. But perhaps will Johann Heinrich Füssli’s paintings help you remember this nocturnal adventure. Make the most of the last days to give it a go!

The museum brought together about sixty masterpieces from public and private collections to give a big picture of the career and talent of this artist rather little-known in France. Painter of the imaginary, Füssli is inspired by the mythology and the Bible as well as great masterpieces from the Shakespearian literature to depict dramatic scenes at the border between the world of dreams and the fantastic. And we owe him the painting of the Nightmare leaning over a sleeping lady.

Satan, Lady McBeth, Ulysses… Füssli enjoys playing with the shadows and lights to depict torments of men, torn between the good and evil. Themed deeply anchored in culture and literature, taken over by the painter as famous characters.

This work on lights gives a dramatic character, sublime and passionate, to his pieces. Subjects are given pride of place thanks to the light, contrasting with the dark and tormented landscapes.

The beauty and fineness of the lines also stand out against the harsh topic. Violence, death, nightmare, witchcraft… The Swiss painter plays with the viewer’s feeling of terror and horror who cannot look away from this oh-so bright paintings depicting such harrowing themes. One feels like jailed in these fantastic worlds, like caught in these stories set before one’s eyes.
