The anniversary exhibition at the House of Victor Hugo celebrates the 120 years of the museum, from May 10 to September 3, 2023. For the event, more than 230 works are presented: photographs, manuscripts, drawings, furniture, paintings, prints ... The museum pays tribute to the symbol of French literature, but also to his descendants and donors who have supported the establishment since its inception. The museum was opened on the initiative of Paul Meurice, journalist, playwright and confidant of the poet, and the family of Victor Hugo.Jean Hugo, the poet's great-grandson, also played an essential role in building the museum's collection.
Many works of other artists are also exhibited, such as those of Julius Balthazar who donated his works around Victor Hugo to the museum or Arnulf Rainer who worked from drawings of the French poet. The anniversary exhibition, with a tour divided into four stages, thus returns to all these collections that have gradually completed the legacy left by the French poet.
The editorial staff had the opportunity to discover all these collections through a floor entirely dedicated to theanniversary exhibition. The proposed itinerary retraces both the life of the author and the evolution of the museum opened since 1903. One can admire the various works of Victor Hugo, as well as their contemporary echoes, notably through some works recently acquired by the museum. The editors particularly liked this journey into theauthor's posterity, where we find illustrations, photographs or sculptures, from the adaptations of his works. One can then enjoy strolling through the rooms dedicated to the exhibition, but also visit again the former apartments of Victor Hugo.
This exhibition is an opportunity to (re)discover all the works of Victor Hugo and the artists who worked with him, but also to enter the intimate place of this emblematic figure.
