In a sculptural dialogue, Madame Grès (1903-1993) and Azzedine Alaïa (1935-2017) left their mark on fashion history with their shared passion for the art of couture. The apparent simplicity of their creations conceals an extreme complexity of cut and design, guided by the fabric itself.
In the fold of the Fondation Azzedine Alaïa's new fashion exhibition, on view from September 11, 2023 to May 20, 2024, visitors will be carried away by the enchantment of 60 creations, reflections of two creative souls turned dress sculptors.
This groundbreaking exhibition, which brings them together for the first time, highlights their shared love of draping for one and cutting for the other. Long, flowing, pleated dresses, these masterpieces embody the essence of their art. Grès dresses, established as total art in the 1930s, merge with Alaïa's unparalleled creativity.
Masters of their craft, they stubbornly followed their path. Alaïa, the last couturier to master all stages of design and production, was also a great collector. Among his treasures are 700 Madame Grès dresses in the inventory of his foundation, some of which are presented for the first time in this exhibition.
Their encounter offers a timeless lesson that transcends fashion. It's an ode to the beauty of cut and structured elegance, where couture becomes a true work of art. TheAlaïa/Grès exhibition celebrates two creative souls, sculptors of dresses, whose influence endures in the history of fashion.
