Discover Boris Lipnitzki, the Russian photographer who chronicled the Paris of the 1930s.

The Jewish photographer and his family fled Eastern Europe and the pogroms perpetrated by Russia in the 1920s. Arriving in France, the young artist quickly built a career as a renowned photographer, using his passions and connections. Thanks to the Russian aristocracy in exile in Paris, Boris Lipnitzky was able to meet and work with fashion designer Paul Poiret, painters Vassily Kandinsky and Marc Chagall, and composer Serge Prokofiev...

These early contacts opened ever-widening doors, and the photographer soon became a reference in his field in Paris. He immortalized on film the greatest artists of his time: Jean Cocteau, Edith Piaf, Joséphine Baker, Yves Montant, Pablo Picasso, André Breton, Buster Keaton, Colette, Coco Chanel, Marguerite Duras, James Joyce, Jean-Paul Sartre, Boris Vian...

He also works with fashion designers Elsa Schiaparelli and Cristóbal Balenciaga, photographing their collections for renowned magazines. Music, fashion, theater: Boris Lipnitzky combines passion and know-how in his studio in the Faubourg Saint-Honoré, then in the Colisée in Paris.

Thanks to Paul Poiret, the photographer has access to memorable parties, where the Tout-Paris meets. On his film, we find the essential figures of the capital of the 1930s, as well as the fashionable places of the time, such as the Molitor swimming pool, the Champs-Elysées, artists' studios...

Through 76 exceptional prints, Galerie Roger-Viollet brings to light these festive moments, these personalities, these corners of interwar Paris. Come and discover Boris Lipnitzky and his world, in this new exhibition.
