In the run-up to this year's Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, museums in the Paris region are offering the general public exhibitions focusing on sport. At musée du Domaine départemental de Sceaux, in the Hauts-de-Seine department, the discipline explored is cycling, from June 21 to December 31, 2024! In the Orangerie, this major exhibition is devoted to cycles, a means of transport that originated with the draisienne in the early 20th century.
From its origins to today's sports and leisure activities, the museum traces thehistory of the bicycle, a two-wheeled vehicle with no engine, which can be used to cover long distances. Useful in everyday life, it was a revolutionary object at the time, giving rise to famous sporting competitions such as the Tour de France, which gave it its letters of nobility. The museum's collection includes a set of 25 antique bicycles belonging to Robert Grandseigne, an aviation pioneer and great bicycle enthusiast.
The collection also includes Louis-Guillaume Perrault's steam-powered velocipede, considered to be the first motorcycle in history, a historic vehicle with a key place in the history of technology. It's also an opportunity to discover the park and château, located just five kilometers south-west of the capital.
