When questions of insularity and memory meet and resonate with current events... galerie Perrotin welcomes Isle of Thanet, Nick Goss 's first solo exhibition in the French capital, from August 31 to October 21, 2024. Through eleven new works, the British artist plunges us into a universe where insularity, memory and artistic references mingle. A genuine invitation to explore the depths of a region on the bangs ofEngland, but also of the mind, through the eyes of a painter who brings life back to an almost forgotten island.
Nick Goss conceived this series of paintings after talking to a museum curator who had recently moved to Margate, Kent. The artist explains that this area, known as theIsle of Thanet, was once separated from the rest of the UK by a river, before the river silted up in the 17th century. This past isolation of the island has been a source of inspiration for Goss, whose paintings explore what island life means in our own time. Walople Bay, one of the works on show, illustrates this link between history and the artist's creative imagination, blending genealogy, memory and varied influences.
Theexhibition doesn't just depict landscapes; it invites the viewer to embark on an introspective journey. Nick Goss's techniques, which combine natural pigment tempera, oil paint and silkscreen, make his works as dense as the genealogies they evoke.
It's impossible to grasp all the references hidden within, but it's precisely this multiplicity that creates a visual "inebriation". As the philosopher Clément Rosset points out,"drunken perception can in fact quite reasonably be described as a way of accessing the real". The artist's canvases, with their successive layers of references and techniques, push the viewer into a new, almost hallucinatory perception of reality.
An exploration of the mind, where each painting is the stage for an encounter between history, memory and imagination. Whether you're a fan of contemporary art or simply curious to discover new perspectives, this exhibition at Galerie Perrotin is an opportunity to plunge into the world of Nick Goss. Shall we drop in?
