After the Olympic tapestry, the national manufactures of Gobelins and Beauvais have received another exceptional commission, this time a royal one! In 2020, the New Carlsberg Foundation commissioned 16 tapestries to decorate a Danish castle, Koldighus, which needed them for the windows between the windows of its arms room. Once completed, most of the tapestries will be exhibited for a month, from June 6 to July 30, 2025, in the heart of the Grand Palais, in an exhibition showcasing fine craftsmanship.
The New Carlsberg Foundation, with one of the world's largest collections of French art, turned to the Mobilier National for the excellence of its expertise. Based on cartoons designed by artists Bjørn Nørgaard, Tal R, Alexander Tovborg and Kirstin Roepstorff, the tapestries will be made at the Manufactures des Gobelins and de Beauvais, as well as the Ateliers d'Aubusson.
A blend of ancestral techniques and contemporary graphics will be showcased in this unique exhibition, which aims to reveal to the general public the richness of weaving techniques and innovation in the field of tapestry, celebrating art and craftsmanship. You'll be able to discover the secrets of these skills, from weavers to cardboard painters, through awareness-raising workshops, immersive installations and other activities for the whole family.
