Less touristy, the 20th arrondissement of Paris and its quartier-villages have many surprises in store for us, thanks to theirlittle-known heritage. Take a stroll through the Charonne district, not far from Alexandre Dumas station and the Père Lachaise cemetery, and you'll come across an imposing, bright-white church of distinctive architecture. Given its size, it's astonishing that you don't catch a glimpse of it until you're almost face to face with it. This is one of the 20th arrondissement's hidden treasures, theSaint-Jean-Bosco church in Paris.
Built between 1933 and 1937, this Catholic church features an art deco style by Romanian architectDumitru Rotter and his son René. It was also inspired by the church of Notre-Dame du Raincy. Its 53-meter-high steeple dominates the surrounding area, and the interior features stained glass windows by Jean Gaudin and Antoine Bessac, as well as ornaments and altars by theMaujéman workshop, considered a dynasty of master glassmakers and mosaicists spanning three generations.
It's a masterpiece that deserves to be known. As impressive on the outside as it is on the inside, theSaint-Jean-Bosco church in Paris is one of the capital's most remarkable buildings. For lovers of architecture, history, art and spirituality, we highly recommend a visit to this heritage treasure in the 20th arrondissement.
