On a charming, low-traffic street in the 11th arrondissement, a stone's throw from Père Lachaise and Voltaire, Café Mirabelle set up shop in 2017, an Alsatian project from the equally Alsatian Marion Goettlé, a pastry chef trained in the great Houses of her native region and who then moved on to Heimat, Jean-François Piège and Sébastien Gaudard in Paris.
With her desire to pay homage to Alsatian cuisine while giving it a contemporary twist, the chef is following in the footsteps of her grandfather, Paul Schloesser, who headed up the Michelin-starred Maison Kammerzell and then the Ami Schutz in Strasbourg's Petite France district.
Café Mirabelle can be enjoyed at any time of day, with a menu to suit every moment. From breakfast (home-made viennoiserie, freshly squeezed fruit juice, hot drink; €9.5) to afternoon tea (tea or coffee, home-made pastries on a plate; €12.50), not forgetting the affordable lunch (main course/dessert menu; €19.50), which features Alsatian specialities, but also looks to other regions.
Like the devilish veal cordon bleu with munster and spätzles, käseknepfle (gnocchi with fromage blanc), fleischnecke (meat rolls) or, new to the menu, a salted brioche perdu topped with a caponata of eggplant, feta and candied peppers (19€). We're still licking our fingers. To be washed down with Alsatian wines, of course!
Better still, Marion Goettlé has even devised a 'Mirabelle plum time' menu (€38), where this little golden plum is used from starter to dessert. Enough to intrigue! Flammekueche worshippers won't be outdone, either, with a host of flambéed tarts (13€-16€) to enjoy with friends in the cosy restaurant or on the large terrace.
While each of these offerings is appealing - and rightly so - it's the brunch we've fallen for. Offered on Saturdays and Sundays from 10am to 3:30pm, Café Mirabelle's brunch is a must-taste for anyone in the mood for an original, generous, affordable and, above all, 100% home-made brunch. All for €36 per person.
The menu includes a choice of homemade viennoiserie (croissant,'schneck' raisin bread, or an excellent seasonal fruit turnover), a hot drink (coffee, cappuccino, tea, herbal tea or hot chocolate), a fresh juice (juice of the day, squeezed orange or iced tea), and homemade bread spread with butter and jam. Add to that scrambled eggs with salmon or guanciale and a plate of baby vegetables.
Afterwards, you'll have to choose between a granola with seasonal fruits or a bibelskäss and roast potatoes to dip happily in.
You thought you were done? Not at all! Café Mirabelle's brunch ends on a sweet note, with a dessert to choose from among the weekend's three offerings. And given the mastery of the chef behind these little marvels, this brunch is bound to end on a high note.
So you can leave with a full belly!
