Here's an address that fits in perfectly with thefuture of gastronomy in these times of climate change. At Le Rigodon, French cuisine is simple and seasonal, but above all well-cultivated, using farm produce from short supply chains.
Behind this new restaurant raisonné is Normandy-born Côme Jousset, who escaped the world of hotel finance to return to farming and livestock breeding, his first childhood love, which he inherited from his father and their farm tours together in the Pays d'Auge.
The young proprietor is therefore taking every precaution to open Le Rigodon, whether it's animal welfare, fair remuneration of the small independent producers from whom the short-circuit products are sourced, the carbon footprint of this first restaurant or even labels - organic, but not only.
Lunch menus are competitively priced - €19 for a starter/main course or main course/dessert, €25 for a full menu - proof if any were needed that it's possible to eat good food without racking up a hefty bill. And it's thanks to the short, constantly-changing menu and the produce, all seasonal and sourced directly from producers, that Côme Jousset manages to keep costs down.
The lunchtime menu features 2 starters, 2 main courses and 2 desserts by Californian chef Gina McLintock, including a vegetarian option each day - but not a boring one. Comforting mushroom and leek broth; fennel, apple and dill salad; competition beef lasagne; calamarata pasta with button mushrooms and chestnuts; and a dessert of whipped yoghurt and cardamom dates. Simple happiness.
And if the simplicity lies in the plates, so too does the rustic decor, with its wooden banquettes, colorful cushions and antique paintings. A glass of natural, organic or biodynamic wine in hand, chosen from among the 25 references carefully selected by Côme Jousset, is the perfect setting for a cheerful toast.
In addition to all this goodness, on Sundays from 11.30am to 4pm, it's farmhouse brunch at Le Rigodon (€29) with a choice of hot drink, fresh fruit juice, viennoiseries and Normandy dish. And when the weather's nice on weekdays, the restaurant also offers a takeaway sandwich or salad option, ideal for a picnic on the go.
Whether vegetarian or meaty, the sandwiches created by Côme Jousset and Gina McLintock are in keeping with the establishment's philosophy: homemade, deceptively simplistic, and made with select farm produce. Each day, 3 sandwiches are offered, as well as a large salad.
Generously sized, the sandwich with artisanal white ham and 24-month Comté is particularly tasty, delicately enhanced with sweet markers - honey-soy butter and a delicious sweet-and-sour currant sauce. It's a lovely snack that comes with your choice of beverage - berry apple and elderflower juice, fig leaf kombucha, Normandy-brewed beer - and a fondant cookie, for the naughtiest. A little neighborhood nugget!
