After two openings in Lyon, Chikin Bang opens its first restaurant just outside Paris, in La Défense. We're off to the 3rd floor of the new Les 4 Temps shopping center, specially dedicated to food, to discover this new Korean street food spot.
The decor has an urban feel, just like in Seoul. Red brick walls, colorful neon signs, store grids and K-pop posters set the scene. At the entrance, two kiosks allow us to order and pay quietly, pick up a beeper and settle in while waiting for the order to be prepared. When the buzzer sounds, all you have to do is pick up the trays at the counter.
The menu features 5 different varieties of fried chicken, ranging from Spicy Gochu-Bang (the spicy version, you guessed it) to honey-mustard, garlic-soy, curry-parmesan and plain. Crisp and spicy, they're generous. They can be served with rice or classic, cheddar or spicy fries.
The house also offers ultra-gourmet corndogs, these sausage cones wrapped in mozzarella, all fried in a classic version or wrapped in fries. We warn you, it's substantial! For good eaters only.
A number of Korean tapas are also on offer, including the famous kimchi, chicken ravioli and Ttebokki, which we really enjoyed. It looks small in the bowl, but it's pretty hearty. A bit like giant gnocchi in a spicy sauce. If you don't like chilli, you'll have to pass, otherwise, it's a real party!
Several Guaboas are also on the menu, in fried chicken, beef bulgogi or vegetarian versions. They're richly garnished, as moist as they are generous.
If you're in the mood for a bibimbap-style bowl that offers rice as well as vegetables and meat (or not), opt for the Bowls, which come in bulgogi, fried chicken or vegetarian versions.
Finally, we end on a sweet note with an assortment of Bingsus, Korean desserts made with crushed ice, condensed milk and various toppings. Oreo, speculos, mango or suede, the choice is yours. The house also offers a corndog or a chocolate-banana guabao, as well as mochi. All to be accompanied by classic drinks, Soju (a rice-based spirit native to Korea), Korean beer or aloe vera drink.
Count €13.90 for a bowl, €8.50 for 6 pieces of fried chicken, €6 to €7 for guabao and €7 for corndog. The spot is open every day except Sunday, from noon to 3:00 pm and from 7:00 pm to 10:30 pm. There's plenty of food on the go when you're out and about at La Défense!
