Be ready to see the Montparnasse Tower undergoing some works. In 2015, the Montparnasse Tower co-owners issued a call for the Montparnasse Tower of the 21st century, with an envelope of 300 million euros.
A greener, brighter and more open Montparnasse Tower matching the 21st century city and the Olympics 2024 but that requires to close for several years. If works were thought to start in 2019, the project is running behind and the Montparnasse Tower isn't expected to be emptied before 2021.
The call for proposal pleased 700 architect’s office which hasten to create projects each crazier than the next. This Tuesday September 19, 2017, the co-owners announced the winning project, those of the trio of French offices – Chartier-Dalix, Franklin Azzi and Hardel et Le Bihan – brought together under the Cabinet Nouvelle Agence pour l’Opération Maine-Montparnasse.
Goodbye tinted windows, say hello to more transparent windows that will bring more light in. Other considerable change, 18 additional meters with hanging gardens and over 850 sqm of photovoltaic panels for a positive energy use. To remain ecofriendly and aiming at reforming, most of the 7,200 tinted windows will be used inside to create walls or will be crushed to end as embankment on the spot, and tree-filled balconies will be set up on each of the 58 floors. Finally, 70% of the ventilation will be natural thanks to Parisian winds.
Originally built in 1973, the Montparnasse Tower will be focused on the city more than today, especially thanks to patios at the level of the four ends, restaurants, a hotel, a day nursery…
These works require the Montparnasse Tower to be emptied of its inhabitants before late 2020.
