LREM (a liberal political party in France) and Nupes (a left-wing alliance of political parties) are willing to protect abortion right by setting it into the Constitution. Following the United-States’ historical overturn on the matter, here are more details on the reaction of the Presidential majority of the French Parliament.

This is the news that shook the world on Friday June 24, 2022: the United-States ended constitutional right to abortion.
As a response to this historical overturn, the presidential majority group, LREM, announced on Saturday June 25, 2022, they will file a draft bill to set “respect of abortion right into our Constitution”.

Following this decision that beyond the United States is “catastrophic for women in the world”, LREM deputy leader Aurore Bergé reacts: “It also calls for us to make provisions, so, tomorrow no such overturn can occur. This is the very reason why today, with my group, we will bring in a constitutional law proposal to set abortion right respect into our Constitution”, she said when interviewed by France Inter.

Unfortunately, as “nothing is impossible and women’s rights are still fragile and regularly questioned”, setting this law to protect abortion right into our Constitution is a “warranty” for women for “the constitution cannot be changed like the law can”, the parliamentarian told France Inter.

The position of LREM occurs shortly after Insoumis party member Mathilde Panot announced she was to propose Nupes this Monday to bring up a law to set abortion right into the Constitution.

Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne announced she was “strongly” supporting this initiative, so is Minister of Justice Eric Dupond-Moretti.
