It's an application that street art enthusiasts know well. Street Art Cities is organizing a new edition of its competition to choose the most beautiful fresco in the world in 2024. So, who will succeed Sfhir, last year's winner for his work in Spain? For the moment, the suspense remains. But Internet users are invited to vote for their favorite mural from a selection of 100 works in some 20 countries (Great Britain, Portugal, United States, Romania, Colombia, Germany, Japan, Argentina, Brazil, Poland, Uruguay, Austria, Switzerland, Netherlands, etc.) and over 50 cities worldwide.
In France, 14 murals (compared with 4 last year) have been selected, including 1 in the Île-de-France region. But who is the street artist behind this highly acclaimed fresco, and where is it located? We tell you all about it!
The only work produced in the Paris region and selected by Street Art Cities for the 2024 edition of its international competition is located in Argenteuil. This Val-d'Oise commune is home to an impressive work by Hopare.
Hopare, whose real name is Alexandre Monteiro, is known for his sculptures and large-scale frescoes of female faces in Lisbon, Portugal, Tallinn, Estonia and the Lofoten Islands, Norway. In France, the artist has already graced the walls of several cities, including Paris, Grenoble, Bordeaux, Saint-Brieuc, Montévrain and Calais.
In 2024, Hopare created a monumental work of art in Argenteuil, making it the street artist's largest project to date in France. Conceived as part of the 150th anniversary of Impressionism, this fresco covers the huge 317 m² gable of the Toit et Joie - Poste Habitat - residence at N°98 avenue Maurice Utrillo. Other French works selected by Street Art Cities this year include another fresco byHopare in Toulouse, a JP in Questembert, one by Bache in Boulogne-sur-Mer, one by Ciclope in La Seyne-sur-Mer and one by Rémi Tournier in Aurec-sur-Loire. Urban artist Oscar Axo has also been selected for his work in Lurcy-Lévis, as have WD (Wild Drawing) in Aurec-sur-Loire, Iota in Saint-Brieuc, Monkey Birds crew in Metz, Millo, Case Maclaim in Boulogne-sur-Mer, Shozy in Grenoble, Artez in Boulogne-sur-Mer and finally Spear in Port-de-Bouc.
Note that Spain has the most murals selected for this year's competition, with a total of 17 entries, just ahead of Italy (15 murals)! In addition, three categories are being put to the vote of Internet users: the"Best Mural of the World" category (the 3 best winners of each month in 2024 chosen by the Instagram audience), the"Artist Choice" category (pre-selected by a panel of artists. Hopare is part of this second category), and the"Expert Spotlight" category (pre-selected by a panel of experts).

"100% Paper III" is the name of the third edition of Hopare's group show in collaboration with Urban Signature.
