France is in mourning following the death of Jane Birkin on July 16. The celebrated icon leaves behind her incandescent imprint on French fashion and song, as well as two talented daughters and grandchildren. She also "leaves" her name to the legendary Birkin bag by Hermès, which has been under fire more than ever since her death.
The story goes back to 2015, when Jane Birkin became aware of the mistreatment of animals on the Maison's partner farms. The actress then expressly asked Hermès to remove her name from crocodile skin bags. But to no avail ...
Following her death, Peta, the animal rights NGO, reopened the case, calling on Hermès to reconsider its policy towards the use of exotic skins. The Birkin bag, a symbol of luxury and elegance, hides a less glamorous reality. In fact, the manufacture of a single bag requires the sacrifice of three crocodiles. Peta encourages Hermès to consider more animal-friendly alternatives, in line with the ethical values of our time.
So, will Hermès finally take Jane Birkin's request into consideration? Will it initiate a process of positive change, in line with contemporary values of respect and protection of wildlife?
To be continued...
