Paris is experiencing a first this year with a vast mosquito control operation. The night-time operation will cover the 13th arrondissement and the south of the city, in response to the growing threat posed by the tiger mosquito, as ARS Île-de-France informs us. The agents, equipped with overalls and masks, will be spraying on foot and from trucks an insecticide on green spaces, bushes and trees, where these pests find refuge. During this action, traffic will be interrupted in the streets concerned.
To ensure everyone's safety:
This large-scale deployment follows the diagnosis of dengue fever in an individual, on August 22, living in a building around which mosquito control will take place. This rapid response is explained by the tiger mosquito's ability to transmit tropical viruses if it bites an infected person and then another healthy one. The aim is clear: to avoid an outbreak of dengue fever in the capital.
Other localities are also concerned:
A total of 71 départements are on red alert for this threat. Communes such as Châtillon in Hauts-de-Seine have already alerted the French government.
In 2023, 6 mosquito control operations have been approved by ARS Île-de-France in the Ile-de-France region, including Draveil and Verrières-le-Buisson in Essonne, and Saint Mandé and Maisons-Alfort in Val-de-Marne. These mosquito control campaigns, similar to those planned this week in Paris 13th and Colombes, were launched following the detection of an imported case of dengue fever. Their aim is not to eradicate the tiger mosquito, but to limit the spread of dengue fever, a condition that can present serious complications.
Faced with these realities, we can only stress the importance of being vigilant and following the authorities' recommendations during this period. Let's hope that this mosquito control operation is effective in preserving everyone's health.
