The Paris Administrative Court has just suspended the Crous' controversial decision to limit student housing leases until June 30, 2024, in order to make them vacant to staff the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. A first victory for the students, even if the case could well be re-examined again ...

This Thursday, August 31, 2023, the Paris Administrative Court suspended Crous's decision to"limit the occupancy leases of the accommodation to June 30, 2024" in order to make them vacant during the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Indeed in May 2023, the Crous had announced that it only wanted to rent accommodation to students until June 31, rather than the usual August 31, in order to accommodate staff for the global event. This measure was strongly criticized by the Solidaires étudiant-e-s union, which declared that "young people" would be deprived of their choice to stay in their accommodation, to the benefit of the Olympic Games. The court ruled that the decision of the Crous d'Île-de-France was illegal and prejudicial to the rights of students.

Following the court's verdict, the French Minister for Higher Education and Research, Sylvie Retailleau, defended herself by stating that no student would have been left without accommodation during the Olympics, assuring that "everything would have been done to limit the inconvenience: rehousing in the vicinity and covering the costs for this move", according to comments gathered by Le Parisien .

Although the students have won their case for the time being, the Crous is considering re-examining its requisition project. To be continued...
