"Other worlds in the cosmos? The search for planets similar to our Earth and... perhaps harboring life!" a public lecture open to all, by Michel Mayor, winner of the 2019 Nobel Prize in Physics.

Are there other worlds in the universe? Does life exist elsewhere in the cosmos? Today's technology has transformed this age-old dream into a fascinating field of astrophysics. Twenty-eight years after the discovery of the first planet orbiting a star like our Sun, several thousand planetary systems have been discovered.

These first discoveries have revealed the astonishing diversity of these systems, very different from our own solar system. After the euphoria of these initial discoveries, the era of exoplanet atmospheric studies has now begun. Despite the enormous contrast between the brightness of the star and the very low luminosity reflected by the planet, atmospheric analysis is beginning, and will benefit from space and ground-based telescopes.

Does life exist in other parts of the cosmos? A dizzying question. Analysis of planetary atmospheres could reveal biosignatures, i.e. the spectral characteristics induced by the development of life. Progress in the spectroscopic study of exoplanets suggests that the search for extraterrestrial life is possible.
