The City of Paris has introduced a Zone à Trafic Limité (ZTL) in the capital's hyper-center. This means that vehicles cannot drive through the heart of Paris without stopping. But what are the risks of non-compliance?

As of Monday November 4, 2024, the city of Paris has introduced a Limited Traffic Zone in the first four arrondissements of the capital. This measure, aimed at reducing traffic in the Paris hyper-center, now prohibits motorized vehicles from crossing the heart of Paris without stopping for authorized reasons. As part of the implementation of this measure, the mayor's office is allowing itself a period of prevention and awareness-raising with regard to the CO2 emissions that could be avoided with the help of this measure, before motorists are penalized for non-compliance.

And just what are the risks for offending vehicles? Drivers of motorized vehicles are liable to a €135 fine if they drive through the center of the capital without stopping. This measure does not apply to cyclists or scooters. Through traffic is prohibited 7 days a week, 24 hours a day.

On the other hand, there are several reasons for stopping in a ZTL: living there, working there, having a medical consultation there, going to visit friends, a store, a business, a cinema, making a delivery, a breakdown service... As for controls, it is not yet known exactly how they might be carried out.
