Anne Hidalgo, mayor of Paris since 2014, confirms in an interview with Le Monde that she will not be standing in the 2026 municipal elections. She wishes to step down after two terms and invest in new projects, while completing the transformations undertaken in the capital, particularly in the face of climate disruption.

Mayor of Paris for the past 10 years, Anne Hidalgo asserts that this decision, "taken a long time ago", is part of a logic of transmission. After succeeding Bertrand Delanoë in 2014, she was re-elected in 2020, marking her mandate with ambitious urban projects and the 2024 Olympic Games, which will remain a highlight of her management. She assures that she will remain committed "until the last day" to finalizing her commitments, particularly on ecological issues.

The Socialist politician is backing Rémi Féraud, president of the Paris en commun group, to take over as mayor. In her opinion, he has the qualities needed to bring together the left, apart from La France insoumise, and continue the initiatives undertaken since 2001. She hopes that the ecologists and communists will join this candidacy in the first round. Meanwhile, Emmanuel Grégoire, a former deputy who is now a member of parliament, has also made his candidacy official, supported by several Socialist activists.

Beyond 2026, Anne Hidalgo has ruled out running for president in 2027, after her failure in 2022. She plans to invest herself in the creation of a social-democratic and ecologist political force, and to pursue her commitment to climate justice on a national and international scale. Le Canard Enchaîné reports that she may take on the role of head of the Bloomberg Foundation in Brussels, a role in line with her current priorities.
