While the end-of-year festivities are well and truly underway, another subject is likely to steal the show this Christmas. On December 7 and 8, 2024, Notre-Dame de Paris finally reopens its doors, five years after the fire that ravaged the cathedral.
To celebrate this event in style, a major ceremony is scheduled to be attended by several heads of state. Clara Luciani, Vianney and Garou are also expected to attend.
To ensure the smooth running of the ceremony to reopen Notre-Dame, the Préfecture de police de Paris will be deploying a large-scale security operation around the cathedral. Several metro and RER stations will be closed to passengers on December 7 and 8. This was announced by the Prefect of Police, Laurent Nuñez, in an interview with Le Parisien.

Traffic restrictions are also expected to disrupt the daily lives of motorists, motorized two-wheelers and cyclists. According to France Bleu, motorized traffic will be banned on the Left Bank quays, between the Pont de la Tournelle and the Pont-Neuf, from 2:00 pm on Wednesday December 4. Cyclists will also be affected by the ban, as the cycle path will be completely closed. Pedestrians, however, will still be able to access the Left Bank quays. The ban is due to end on Monday December 9 at 12pm.
Then, from 7am on Saturday December 7 to 8pm on Sunday December 8, the Paris Prefecture de Police will set up a SILT anti-terrorist perimeter, covering the whole of the Ile de la Cité and several Paris bridges. What's the consequence? Motorized vehicles will be banned from circulating within this security perimeter. In addition, residents will be required to provide proof of address in order to pass through the perimeter.
What about traffic on the right bank quays? In the columns of Le Parisien, the Préfet de Police announced that road traffic would be maintained. However, there will be occasional closures to facilitate the passage of the motorcades of the various heads of state. These blackouts are scheduled to take place on Saturday from 5:00 p.m., and on Sunday between 9:00 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. For the time being, the Préfecture de Police has not yet announced the areas concerned. However, these occasional blackouts could take place from Concorde, Pont Alexandre III to Pont-Neuf. The Paris Prefecture of Police therefore recommends that motorists avoid the Paris hypercentre on December 7 and 8, 2024.
