The verdict fell, this Wednesday, July 24, 2024: the French Alps will host the 2030 Winter Olympics, subject to conditions.

The Paris 2024 Olympic Games haven't even started yet, but on Wednesday, July 24, 2024, we learn where the 2030 Winter Olympics will be held. Little surprise, really, as the International Olympic Committee received only one bid, submitted by the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes and Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur regions.

The French Alps will indeed host the 2030 Winter Olympics, which Renaud Muselier, President of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, describes as "the greenest Games in history". The IOC has nevertheless insisted that the 2030 Games will be held in the French Alps, subject to financial guarantees from the French government.

With the recent dissolution of the French National Assembly, discussions concerning the staging of the Games have been put on hold. It will now be a matter of finding guarantees between the new government, its Prime Minister and the International Olympic Committee.

Following this, Emmanuel Macron announced that he would ask the "next Prime Minister" to guarantee funding for the Games, while "enacting an Olympic law in the new government." The next Winter Games, in 2034, are scheduled to be held in Salt Lake City, Utah, USA.
