What would an Olympic Games closing ceremony be, let alone in Paris, without a fashion performance? This Sunday, August 11, 2024, the monumental "Records" show unveiled several fantastic characters straight from the imagination of artistic director Thomas Jolly, and dressed by Swiss designer Kevin Germanier.
At the heart of this show fusing theater, circus and breakdance, Germanier designed the stage outfits for over 120 dancers, including the"Golden Voyager" who lit up the evening in an extravagant recycled gold jumpsuit embroidered with 20,000 pearls. These creations, all made from eco-responsible fabrics, were for the most part produced at the Ateliers de la Montjoie in Saint-Denis.
The couturier, who had already given makeovers to some of the personalities at the opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympics, also designed the costume for pianist Alain Roche, now famous for making his instrument sound vertical in front of the whole world. A second couture work, elaborated with over 200 reels of recycled VHS cassettes of his childhood films, including Louis de Funès, Pokémon, or La Soupe aux Choux, sourced by his mother in Switzerland.
As you may have guessed, Kevin Germanier is a designer committed to sustainable and ethical fashion. After studies at the Institut Français de la Mode (IFM) and experiences at Balenciaga and Chloé, he launched his brand in 2018, transforming recycled and upcycled materials, into haute couture pieces. Renowned for his bold creations, he would go on to dress international stars such as Lady Gaga, Beyoncé and Björk.
The closing ceremony began with Zaho de Sagazan in Louis Vuitton, and ended in style with Yseult reinterpreting My Way in a Dior Haute Couture gown. An Olympic finale that doesn't skimp on style!
