Ladj Ly's new project, DUMAS - DIABLE NOIR, will retrace the life of General Thomas Alexandre Dumas, a slave who became a hero of the French Revolution. Shooting will begin in summer 2025.

Oscar-winning director Ladj Ly, best known for his hit Les Misérables, is tackling an ambitious new project with DUMAS - DIABLE NOIR, a film that traces the extraordinary life of Thomas Alexandre Dumas, the first black general in the French army and father of the illustrious writer Alexandre Dumas. Produced by Pathé, Chapter 2 and Srab Films, the feature will be a loose adaptation of the comic strip Le Premier Dumas. Scheduled to shoot in summer 2025, the film promises to shed light on an unjustly forgotten historical figure.

Born in 1762 in Saint-Domingue (now Haiti), Thomas Alexandre Dumas, the son of a slave, rose against the odds in the French military hierarchy to become a general during the French Revolution. Serving under Napoleon Bonaparte, Dumas distinguished himself by his courage and commitment to human rights. However, his path crossed that of Napoleon, with whom he ended up at odds. His story would later inspire his son, Alexandre Dumas, to write some of the most iconic masterpieces of French literature, including The Three Musketeers and The Count of Monte Cristo.

DUMAS - DIABLE NOIR will appeal to fans of historical films, epic biographies and great revolutionary figures. It will also appeal to viewers interested in stories of resilience, social justice and the struggle for equality. In addition to rehabilitating a forgotten hero of French history, this adaptation by Ladj Ly, known for his sharp social eye, promises to give contemporary resonance to universal themes of courage and resistance against oppression.

With DUMAS - DIABLE NOIR, Ladj Ly and his partners at Pathé, Chapter 2 and Srab Films are set to offer a captivating film on the life of General Thomas Alexandre Dumas, an essential but neglected figure in French history. Scheduled for shooting in the summer of 2025, the project aims not only to rehabilitate a hero, but also to reflect on themes that are still relevant today, such as courage, justice and human rights.
