Our review of Elden Ring - Shadow of the Erdtree:
Elden Ring returns with its long-awaited DLC, Shadow of the Erdtree, and once again, FromSoftware amazes us with the richness of its scenery and the complexity of its gameplay.
True to the tradition of the franchise, Shadow of the Erdtree plunges us into sumptuous and varied landscapes. The DLC features a new region, the Shadow Kingdom, which is a veritable visual feast. From fields of blue flowers to the ruins of imposing castles, every corner of the world is filled with details and secrets to discover. The developers have succeeded in creating an atmosphere that is both magnificent and oppressive, enhanced by exceptional art direction.
The plot of Shadow of the Erdtree takes place in a forgotten land veiled by the shadow of the occult tree. After defeating Mohg, the Lord of Blood, and approaching the cocoon in the mausoleum of the Mohgwyn dynasty, you are greeted by the enigmatic Leda. She invites you to follow in the footsteps of Miquella - Malenia 's twin brother - across the Shadow Realm in the hope of discovering the fate of the missing god. This quest leads you to explore a world ravaged by the remnants of an ancient war between the Golden Order and the inhabitants of the Shadow Realm. You'll meet a variety of characters who will offer their help or reveal secrets crucial to understanding the mysteries of this land.
Challenge seekers are in for a real treat. FromSoftware doesn't disappoint, maintaining the high level of difficulty characteristic of the series. The bosses, in particular, are designed to test the skills of even the most experienced players. New enemies include horned knights and half-spider/half-scorpion hybrid beasts, each requiring specific strategies to defeat.
Shadow of the Erdtree doesn't just expand the map of the original game; it also refines the gameplay experience. The DLC introduces new weapons, spells and skills that considerably enrich the gameplay. Among these new features, certain weapons stand out for their maneuverability and combat efficiency. Venerated occult tree splinters and spiritual ashes offer new ways to progress and strengthen your character, making every exploration even more rewarding.
Indeed, the DLC introduces a new progression system based on occult tree splinters and venerated spiritual ashes. By exploring the Shadow Realm, players can find these rare items. Once collected in sufficient quantity, these items significantly increase a character's attack and defense stats, making battles against enemies and bosses more affordable. However, these benefits are only active as long as the player remains within the DLC zone. As soon as he leaves the Shadow Realm, the bonuses are deactivated until he returns to that specific region.
Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree is an essential expansion for any fan of the franchise. With its sumptuous environments, tough challenges and many new features, this DLC pushes the boundaries of the original game even further. To access this new adventure, it is necessary to have defeated Radhan and Miquella, two major bosses from the base game, ensuring that only players with a certain amount of experience will be able to venture in. So get ready for an extra challenge, and be amazed by this high-quality additional content.
