You dream of being a knight or a musketeer, a pirate armed with his sword, a Jedi with a lightsaber in his hand... But you don't know how to fight with a sword? Don't panic, your dreams can still come true, if we help you make them come true.
Fencing is an ancient and typically French combat sport. Did you know that even in international competitions, fencing matches are officiated in French? It's time to honor this heritage by learning how to handle the saber, epee or foil. To do so, head for the many clubs and sports associations that open their doors to all apprentice fencers in Paris and the Île-de-France region.
But wait, not so fast. You don't have to sign up with the first club you come across: fencing has different weapons and different disciplines, depending on your desires and objectives.
You can chooseepee, sabre or foil as your weapon of choice, each with its own advantages, disadvantages and, above all, its own rules of combat.
But the options don't stop there. You can, of course, find courses to learn or practice the sport in its combat form. There's also fitness fencing (often mixed with artistic fencing): this practice combines muscle strengthening and aerobics, often through choreographed combat. Depending on your state of health and age, you may be able to find classes adapted to your needs. Finally, there's a more spectacular, playful type of fencing called GN. This practice combines sport and life-size role-playing, and is notably used in shows, historical re-enactments...
Have you made your choice? To find the right club for you, visit the Fédération Française d'Escrime website, which lists all the fencing clubs in France. In Paris and Ile-de-France, there are over a hundred fencing halls and clubs. To find the one nearest you, enter the name of your city in the search bar.
