Learning to row involves many aspects, from mastering rowing techniques to understanding the basic principles of boat navigation. Beginners first learn how to get in and out of a boat safely. They are also introduced to balancing the boat, which is crucial to avoid capsizing!
Rowers also learn to adopt the right posture in the boat, working on their balance and coordination. They are also taught how to hold the oars correctly to maximize efficiency. Learning different rowing techniques is an essential part of rowing training! This includes synchronized movements, recovery and propulsion phases, as well as fine adjustments to maintain the boat's stability and direction.
Rowers also learn to navigate in calm and rough water, through understanding tides, currents and weather conditions to ensure safe navigation. As rowing requires a high level of fitness, training programs often include cardiovascular, muscle-strengthening and flexibility exercises to improve endurance and strength.
Those who wish to go even further can also look forward to taking part in rowing competitions, whether local, national or international regattas. So, let's get practising!
