Equestrianism embodies the harmony between man and horse, a symbiosis that has spanned the ages and civilizations. The history of this sport goes back to the dawn of mankind, when man domesticated the horse to make it his traveling companion, his ally in battle, and then his partner in leisure.
The great civilizations ofantiquity, the Greeks and Romans, practiced horseback riding in military and sporting contexts, such as chariot racing at the very first Olympic Games. Then, in the Middle Ages, the discipline became crucial to chivalry, where mastery of horse and weapon was essential. Tournaments and jousts were prestigious events in which knights competed for bravery and skill.
Today, horseback riding remains a universal passion, with a wide range of events enabling everyone to find their own path in this ancient art:
- dressage showcases the grace and suppleness of the horse, as well as the precision of the rider's movements
- show jumping requires speed, agility and complicity between the equestrian pair
-endurance tests the physical and mental stamina of horse and rider over long distances.
Beyond competition, equestrian sport also offers a sense of escape, whether on horseback in the great outdoors or during riding lessons in riding schools.
For those who would like to try their hand at riding, the Fédération Française d'Équitation lists the sites dedicated to the practice of equestrian sports in the region.
