In recent months, Shaka Ponk has become more accustomed to playing large venues than small ones. Zenith tour, but also LDLC Arena in Lyon, Palais Nikaïa in Nice, Arena in Narbonne or Dôme in Marseille, Arkéa Arena in Bordeaux and Palais des Sports in Grenoble... Shaka Ponk are in the midst of their farewell tour, criss-crossing the roads of France to perform their many hits live for the very last time, and to offer their fans a good dose of musical bliss.
In the near future, Frah, Sam and the others plan to hit the festival circuit(Les Francofolies de La Rochelle, Hellfest, Garorock, the Nîmes festival...) before playing four huge concerts at theAccor Arena in Paris. But before rushing into these huge venues, Shaka Ponk took the time to offerEurope 2 listeners an ultra-intimate, private concert. On Thursday, May 30, 2024, the 6-member band took over the small venue of La Bellevilloise, in the 20th arrondissement of Paris, to play some of their now cult tracks.
And as you'd expect, the atmosphere was just right last Thursday. As generous as ever live, Shaka Ponk really wore out their fans and made them sweat, creating pogos, wall of death, slam sessions and numerous kangaroo jumps.
But the band kicked off their set with a gentle rendition of " I "m Picky ", an acoustic version now familiar to all. Beautiful and haunting, this first track is performed by Frah and Sam sitting quietly together, exchanging knowing glances.
But before long, the band and the incredible choir, present on stage right for the occasion, turn up the heat with the beautiful cover of " House Of The Rising Sun ", followed by the rousing " Je m'avance ", the hit " Wanna get free ", the dynamic " J'aime pas les gens " and the effervescent " Tout le monde danse ". On stage, the two frontmen smile broadly, their voices in perfect harmony. Chatting away, Frah is quick to share his delight at playing in a venue of this size, reminding him of the early days of Shaka Ponk.
Known for their commitment to the environment, the band is also committed to animal protection. This Thursday evening, Frah will take the opportunity to denounce bullfighting, a stance applauded by the entire audience. In the audience, the punk and rock rhythms of the band's performance get the bodies moving. One fan even went so far as to climb up on stage before throwing herself into the audience for a successful lesson in stage diving, before returning to the stage to be picked up by Sam, who was visibly won over by this stage moment. For her part, Frah also gave her all (as always), being carried at arm's length by a few spectators on the powerful " Dad'Algorythm ".
And it's with a new cover that Shaka Ponk decide to end their 1-hour set, with a powerful and brilliant rendition of Nirvana's " Smells Like Teen Spirit", sung loud and clear by a tired, but happy and conquered audience, in an exclusive and intimate concert that once again proves just how much Shaka Ponk are a must-see live band. Once their farewell tour is over, we're sure to miss them deeply!
