We fell under their spell at their very first concert in France. It was in June 2023 at La Maroquinerie. One year later, Uuhai returned to the capital with a concert at the Nouveau Casino on Monday June 24, 2024. And one thing struck us right from the start: the punctuality of the 7 members from Mongolia. The folk metal band took to the stage at 8 p.m. sharp, without an opening act. And it doesn't take long for them to electrify the audience and take them with them to faraway, shamanic lands. Uuhai offer a delicious blend of folk, rock and heavy metal, skilfully blended with the traditional art of Khöömii throat singing. To make the journey even more immersive, Uuhai embellish each track with haunting sounds brought to life by the horse-headed fiddle played by two of the 7 members (Zorigoo and Shinetsog-Geni).
Unfortunately, the Nouveau Casino was far from full this Monday evening. It's a pity, because this band really deserves to be seen live. First and foremost, there's the infectious energy of the whole band, but especially of singer Saruul. Proudly wearing the 'Deel', the Mongolian national costume, the singer never ceased to tap into the audience's energy, getting them to raise their fists or brandish their " metal horns ", creating a veritable collective frenzy.
Showing incredible ease, the singer also revealed a deeper, more animal voice than we're used to, giving certain tracks a darker, more metal feel.
Zorigoo and Shinetsog-Geni were equally impressive, with their charisma, energy and vocals. Armed with their sublime horse-headed violins, the two musicians literally took us on a journey to the immense Mongolian steppes with their throat singing, which was as disconcerting as it was bewitching.
Although the band doesn't yet have an LP to its credit, Uuhai is multiplying its singles and is not short of inspiration. The proof: on Monday evening, Uuhai played 17 tracks over almost 2 hours, including the powerful and highly successful " Drakula " and " Khar Khulz ". But the band also knew how to offer calmer, more traditional tracks, such as " Beginning ", the sublime "Khurai" and the euphoric shamanic song " Uvidas " at the end of the set.
And the adventure in France continues for Uuhai, who will be at Hellfest on the Temple stage this Saturday, June 29. A godsend for the band, who hope to follow in the footsteps of their compatriots in The HU, whose success continues unabated. We wish them every success!
