Thursday, June 21, 2018, is the Fête de la Musique and the summer solstice! To mark the occasion, the Musée d'Orsay invites us to an exceptional evening in the company of Baltic singers.
All evening long, from 6.30pm to 11pm, concerts will take place in the museum's spaces, along with exhibitions, storytelling and guided tours of the temporary exhibition devoted to Symbolism in the Baltic countries!
On the program for the Curieuse nocturne at the Musée d'Orsay :
- Le Sacre du Tympan concert at 7, 8.30pm and 10pm
Head for the central aisle, for a concert featuring two up-and-comers from the Estonian music scene, the spellbinding Liisi Koikson and Sander Mölder. Three enchanting sets of Baltic folk songs and tunes in the museum's nave.
- Tours of the Wild Souls exhibition, 6:30 pm to 10:30 pm
It's been 100 years since the Baltic states became independent. To celebrate this anniversary, the Musée d'Orsay is devoting an exhibition to art in the Baltic countries, from the 1890s to the 1930s, from April 10 to July 15, 2018. Focusing on Baltic symbolic art, the exhibition explains how folklore and local legends were used by artists at the time of independence. A must-see!
- Let's take a walk in the woods, from 7.30pm to 10pm
All evening long, mediators from the Ecole du Louvre await you for an artistic walk alongside painters with green thumbs: symbolists, naturalists, impressionists... in the museum's collections on level 0.
- C'était le temps des fleurs, 7:30 pm to 10 pm
Summer rhymes with flowers, and flowers with finery... In the foyer of the auditorium, in small groups, museum staff await your introduction to the traditional pagan finery of the Baltic countries. In the Baltic countries, tradition dictates that on the night of the Solstice, men and women adorn themselves with flowers and foliage and spend the night dancing around a fire.
- Solar Bodies, 6:30 pm to 10:30 pm
For one evening, the Musée d'Orsay reopens its ballroom. Thanks to the Diamètre association, a collective of young contemporary art curators, the Musée d'Orsay is giving a voice to the young Baltic generation. Pakui Ardware, Daiga Grantina, the Young Gril Reading Group and Norman Orro will offer a bewildering experience of contemporary art in boreal colors!
- Kalevipoeg, the giant who meant well, 9-10pm
La Cour des Contes presents a traditional tale at 9pm. Do you know the legend of Kalevipoeg, the incredible Estonian giant whose adventures are full of surprises? Told with humor and poetry, in the half-light of the small auditorium, this tale recounts the shattering and baroque epic of the giant Kalevipoeg, between northern lights, lakes, sorcerers and an enchanted sword...
- Les herbes de la Saint-Jean, from 10pm to 11pm
The Musée d'Orsay welcomes an herbalist. Joubarde, sage, St. John's wort or even mandrake... Marylin invites you to join her at 7.30pm to reveal the secrets of solstice herbs.
And all evening long, come and discover the live fresco at Café Campana le temps d'un café (level 5). The "Soirées dessinées" team will spend the evening interpreting the Kalevipoeg epic on the giant paper wall of Café Campana... Come and see the artists at work, follow the progress of their fresco and talk to them!
