Merci Alice! is on at the Théâtre de la Contrescarpe from June 20 to July 7. The play pays tribute to Alice Milliat, an athlete of the 1920s who fought for women's participation in the Olympic Games. A touching portrait of a courageous woman.
Written by Karen Chataigner and directed by Joséphine Hazard, this dramatic comedy takes us back to the early 20th century. At the time, doctors thought that women were too fragile to take part in sports, particularly because their bones could break. So women had to stay at home and look after the household.
One woman stood in the way, Alice Milliat, a top-level swimmer, field hockey player and rower. In 1912, she founded the Fédération des sociétés féminines sportives de France, an organization that played a crucial role in structuring women's sport in France. Following a refusal by the International Olympic Committee to include women in athletics competitions at the Olympic Games, Alice Milliat created the Jeux Mondiaux Féminins in 1921. Thanks to the success of the Women's Games, she convinced the Committee in 1928 to include women in athletics competitions. Alice Milliat is considered an emblematic figure in the fight for gender equality in sport.
Merci Alice! can be seen at the Théâtre de la Contrescarpe from June 20 to July 7, 2024.
